Phyllis Dowd
Phyllis Dowd holds a degree in Early Childhood Education from Hood
College. She has taught in several schools, including Dedham Country
Day School in Boston, and Montessori school in California and Maryland.
She was a stay-at-home mom for 10 years. She has taken graduate
courses at McDaniel College and has attended numerous seminars at
Princeton and Pittsburgh Theological Seminaries and Willow Creek
Community Church in Chicago.
Phyllis serves as director of children and family ministries.
Her responsibilities include Sunday School' classes for all ages,
Youth Club (a weekly after-school program for Grades 3-5), four
weekly Children's Church programs, Children's Messages in worship,
grief and divorce support groups, women's retreats, Mom and Me group,
GPC Book Club, and Vacation Bible School.
What does she do in her spare time? (What spare time?!) Her favorite
thing is spending time with family. Her eldest daughter Hannah will
graduate from Emory Law School this May and assume a position in
a Philadelphia law firm in September, so visits with her will be
more frequent then. Her daughter Molly graduated from Franklin and
Marshall College and works as an analyst for a public relations
firm in Manhattan. Phyllis enjoys trips to NYC, going to Broadway
shows, and eating at great restaurants with Molly. Her son Tom is
a sophomore at Dickinson College and plays on the basketball team
there, so there are many trips to Carlisle during the winter season.
Phyllis and her husband Dennis are also enjoying the "empty nest"
and spontaneous "dinners out"!
Two special events are part of Phyllis' summers. First is an annual
vacation of relaxation, sun, and extended family at Cape Cod. Second
is a church mission trip to the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation
in South Dakota where homes are repaired, clothing and medications
are distributed and diabetic education is offered.
Life is busy, but life is good! God always provides more opportunities
for each of us to enjoy His creation and to serve His people.
